College of Arts & Social Sciences Integration

The College of Arts & Social Sciences is pleased to announce a new integrated and unified structure effective 1 January 2010.

The college will have two Research Schools and an Institute – a Research School of Social Sciences, a Research School of Humanities and the Arts and the Australian Demographic & Social Research Institute – and covers 14 disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas.

The new structure adheres to the principle that ANU does not teach what it does not research.  Importantly the integration of key groups across the college brings together critical mass across our disciplines to more visibly link our research and education and identifies our major interdisciplinary strengths.

“This is an exciting time for the Creative Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines at the ANU.  The College Integration will enable us to more effectively manage and resource our academic and professional staff to provide elite level research and teaching to current and future students both domestically and internationally” says Professor Toni Makkai, College Dean and Director of the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences.

“We have consulted widely, discussed and debated vigorously and developed numerous models to optimise what we need to do well. We aspire to be the research leaders in all our areas of strength and expose our students to the complexity and challenge of research lead education.  We believe the new College structure will deliver in the short term and into the future.” Makkai adds.
